My First Reflection when Teaching Assistance

Teaching assistance in 3rd semester is very interesting. This is the SSE’s program for SSE student to become a new generation of teacher. That were new experience for me, because in the first and second semester I have observed how the learning process was going in elementary school. Now, I have to know and practice how to teach in secondary high school. We have to know that in secondary school the student become adolescence and they must be familiar to think logically and critically.

Since two week I placed in SMA 82. The general impression on the observed classroom in SMA 82, when the teacher teaching and learning process, sometimes is very silent and sometimes crowded. That situation make me confuse, what are means with silent whether the student stay focus or not. Many teacher in there said majority of the student are have a good background like a rich family, so they are is very less to respect the teacher when teaching and learning process. In my opinion when I have observed Mrs. S when teaching and learning mathematics not all the student focused on material, moreover the student who seat at the back they are look like get bored and feel sleepy. They are silent but doesn’t mean pay attention to the teacher.

In my opinion the seating arrangements of student are traditional which has teacher center learning is not effective, because there is large class size so not all of the student can well monitoring. The model of instruction which is the teacher using is direct instruction. She just writes in the white board and gives some exercise for student. This is the effective element when I observed, the teacher gave some exercise in order to assess whether students who following the lesson, have understood about the material or not. But, when the teacher walking around the class for looking whether students doing the exercise or not. Many students who ask about the exercise, they are need more explaining about the material.

I get a lot of lesson from this activity. With practice and observe to the real situation in school I can find the common problem that occurred in senior high school. There are many students who will teach with various characters. I have to creative for make the lesson interesting or fun and also the student get the material although there was mathematics lesson. I have to apply that material to the real life. It is because can make the student get the concepts itself. In the week two when I practice teaching in there, I will make lesson plan to prepare what I have to teach. I want to make some changes from Teacher Centered Learning (TCL) to Student Center Learning (SCL) with combine the model of instruction for make the lesson will not bored. Teacher as a facilitator for make the student keep spirit and have motivation to study, with student center learning the student actively involve, they will present each group and sharing each other’s.
